When Jen Toomey (left) came up to challenge Carrie Tollefson in the final 50 meters...
...of the Olympic Trials 1,500, Tollefson responded. Toomey appeared to tighten up...
...(or tie up) in the final few strides, giving Tollefson the edge. Tollefson won the race...
...in 4:08.32, with Toomey second in 4:08.43. Amy Rudolph (left) used one last-ditch...
...effort to go by Jenelle Deatherage and grab third place in 4:08.57.
Deatherage wound up fourth in 4:08.71.

...Suzy Favor Hamilton was technically on the Olympic team. Tollefson, Toomey, and Rudolph...
...would have until August 9th, however, to chase the standard. As the race winner, if Tollefson got the...
..."A" or "B" standard, she would be on the team... Unless Toomey and/or Rudolph got the "A" standard.
It's too complicated to go into all of the detail here, but when Tollefson crossed the line, she still had work ahead...

Rudolph catches her breath after her dive across the finish line.
Shalane Flanagan finished sixth in 4:11.05 but would be going to Athens in the 5,000.
Sally Hauser finished seventh in 4:12.56.
Tollefson reacts to her win. Even though her spot on the Olympic team wasn't yet secure at this point...
...what ended up happening was that no one new got the "A" standard, but Tollefson got the "B" standard...
...so she was the U.S.'s lone representative in the 1,500 in Athens.
Tollefson stops her celebration to catch her breath.
Marla Runyan jogs off the track after dropping out. She was exhausted, but other than that, she appeared to be fine.
