Liz Woodworth, an NCAA DIII national champion for UW-Oshkosh, warms up for the 1,500m semifinals.
Amy Rudolph narrowly missed making the team in the 5,000 and was back to try again in the 1,500.
Elissa Riedy leads on the first lap of the first 1,500 semifinal. The top five in each heat, plus the runners with...
...the next five fastest times, would advance to the final. Heading into the race, only two women - Suzy Favor Hamilton...
...and Regina Jacobs (who had announced her retirement just before the race and accepted a four-year ban for using a banned substance).
Because no one other than Favor Hamilton had the "A" standard, unless they ran quickly in Sunday's final...
...the Olympic qualifying procedure would become quite messy.
Arkansas' Londa Bevins and Nike's Mary Jayne Harrelson run on the outside of the pack.
Susan Nielsen (formerly Taylor) won the 1,500 at the 2000 NCAA Championships for BYU.
Florida State's Natalie Hughes and Nielsen run in the back of the pack.
L-R: Bevins, Jen Toomey, Riedy, and Sarah Schwald.
The pace lagged early on in the first semifinal...
...so it ended up being a sit-and-kick race.
Toomey (800) and Rudolph (5,000) had already run events at these Trials, while Londa Bevins was making her first appearance.
With one lap to go, the runners begin to position themselves for the kick. Amy Rudolph leads...
...with Jen Toomey and Jenelle Deatherage also up there.
Toomey had dominated the 800 and 1,500 at February's USA Indoor Championships...
...but a lifting injury hampered her training between March and July.
Jenelle Deatherage was having a breakthrough season after moving to Minnesota to train with Team USA Minnesota.
Liz Woodworth won three NCAA DIII titles in 2004 and came into the Trials with a 1,500 PR of 4:15.20.
