The five women up front were considered to be the most serious contenders for the team.
All five of them had run under the Olympic "A" standard of 15:08.70.
Jen Rhines (in back) had already qualified for the Olympic team in the marathon.
Gulli had finished fifth in the NCAA 10,000 one month earlier and Bei was second in the 5,000.
Sarah Hann, a resident of Winchester, New Hampshire, and a two time World XC...
...qualifier runs in her first Olympic Trials.
Missy Buttry's parents and 11 siblings drove 24 hours from Iowa to cheer her on at the Trials.
Amy Yoder Begley and Molly Huddle run in eighth and ninth place.
Gulli leads Bei, Newberry, and Nicolini.
Flanagan continues to lead the race and the lead pack is now down to six.
The top five women were all close in ability, but Runyan and Culpepper...
...were known for having the best finishing speed.
Buttry just finished her junior year at Wartburg College.
