Ann Gaffigan - who, we remind you, began the '04 season with a PR of 10:47 - went on to win the race...
...in 9:39.35. Gaffigan's time was a new American Record and the win earned...
...the recent Nebraska graduate her first USA title.
Gaffigan began running the steeplechase as a college freshman, at her coach's suggestion.
Gaffigan on her way to her first national title.
Kassi Andersen sprained her ankle going over the final water barrier and later had to be carried out of the press conference.
Andersen finished second in 9:45.52.
Carrie Messner finished third in 9:50.70.
Kelly MacDonald finished fifthin 9:56.60.
Lisa Galaviz finished sixth in 9:58.70.
Dawn Cleary finished seventh in 10:05.53.
Lisa Antonelli finished eighth in 10:15.76 and Jane Rudkin finished ninth in 10:19.77.
Purdue junior Amber Ferner, who finished seventh at the previous month's NCAA Championships...
...in 10:15.26, finished 10th here in 10:28.98.
Shook is consoled by her coach. Shook received further consolation when she reclaimed the American Record with a 9:29.32 in Belgium later in the summer.
