Deena Kastor was just running this event as a test of her fitness...
...she had already qualified for the Olympic team in the marathon and...
...planned to run only that event in Athens.
Dana Coons leads Melissa White of Hansons-Brooks.
Katie McGregor takes the lead from Sylvia Mosqueda.

The early pace was relatively conservative and Deena Kastor held back...
...for a few laps before moving to the front and taking off.
Katie McGregor continued to lead the remainder of the competitors.
Kim Fitchen-Young (#1), Amy Yoder Begley (#16), and Sylvia Mosqueda (#15) run in the pack.
Dana Coons has been representing Team USA Minnesota for just under a year.
Melissa White is part of the newly-formed Hansons-Brooks women's team.
Katie McGregor continues to lead the main pack as Elva Dryer, Sylvia Mosqueda, and Kate O'Neill run 3-4-5.
Kristin Price, the 2002 NCAA champion in this event, recently finished out her NCAA career at NC State.
Coons and White continue to work together.
Deena Kastor could only race the clock and lapped runners by this point in the race.

Jenny Crain had quit her job and moved from Wisconsin to Oregon in 2002 to train for the 2004 Trials.
