The most noticeable thing about the start of the women's 1,500 final was Suzy Favor...
...Hamilton's absence. After her an injury flared up in the semifinals, she opted to skip the final.
We can't even begin to describe how hot the weather was for the women's 1,500 final. Just standing or sitting...
...outdoors was nearly unbearable.
L-R: Jenelle Deatherage, Shalane Flanagan, Janet Trujillo, Mary Jayne Harrelson, and Carrie Tollefson.
Tollefson, who has missed making the team in the 5,000, set the pace...
...throughout the race. Marla Runyan, one of the favorites here and the runner-up...
...in the 5,000, hung back early on. Approximately 900 meters into the race, Runyan dropped...
...out, citing fatigue. Tollefson set a pace of 66.7, 67.8, and 66.4 for the first three laps.
With one lap to go, Tollefson led with Shalane Flanagan on her shoulder.
R-L: Tollefson, Flanagan, and Jen Toomey.
With Runyan and Favor Hamilton out of the race, it was now wide open...
...and none of the athletes in the field had the Olympic "B" standard...
...of 4:07.15, let alone the "A" standard (4:05.80).
R-L on the outside: Tollefson, Flanagan, Toomey and Jenelle Deatherage.
Deatherage wound up fourth in 4:08.71 after a great lean by Amy Rudolph.
R-L: Sarah Schwald (8th, 4:13.12), Lindsey Gallo (11th, 4:14.70), Amy Mortimer, and Sally Hauser (7th, 4:12.56).
Amy Mortimer finished ninth in 4:13.64.
Heather Sagan finished 10th in 4:14.37.
Carrie Tollefson led the entire race, until Jen Toomey went by her in the final 100 meters.
