Jen Toomey won the first 1,500 semifinal in 4:14.53 and advanced to the final.
Jenelle Deatherage (4:15.28), Sarah Schwald (4:15.55), Amy Rudolph...
...(4:15.76), and Mary Jayne Harrelson (4:16.10) all advanced automatically.
Carrie Messner, who finished third in the previous day's steeplechase, finished ninth here in 4:20.12.
Toomey congratulates Deatherage. Because the second semi ended up being faster, only five runners advanced from the first semi.
Natalie Hughes finished seventh in 4:17.34 and did not advance to the final.
Liz Woodworth, running in her first USA Championship/Trials race, finished 10th in 4:20.45.
In the second semi-final, Marla Runyan - who had already qualified for the Olympic team in the 5,000 - set...
...the early pace. Shalane Flanagan, Lindsey Gallo, and Amy Mortimer followed.
Runyan continued to lead on the second lap. Runyan represent the U.S. in the 1,500 at the 2000 Olympics.
With Regina Jacobs' suspension for drug use, this event was undergoing a big change in the U.S.
Jacobs had won this race the previous five years at the USA Championships, though her '03 title was taken...

Alisha Williams, a national champion for DII Western State, trails the pack.
With one lap to go, the pack starts to bunch up as the runners try to position themselves for the sprint.
L-R 1st row: Suzy Favor Hamilton, Amy Mortimer, and Marla Runyan. Second row: Sally Hauser, Shalane Flanagan, Treniere Clement, and Carrie Tollefson.
Suzy Favor Hamilton (in shades) hadn't raced due to an injury and only had four weeks to prepare for this race.
Favor Hamilton was trying to qualify for her fourth Olympic team here.
R-L: Shalane Flanagan, Lindsey Gallo, and Sally Hauser.
Heather Sagan and Janet Trujillo with less than a lap to go.
