Toomey won the first 1,500 semifinal in 4:14.53 and advanced to
the final.

Deatherage (4:15.28), Sarah Schwald (4:15.55), Amy Rudolph...

and Mary Jayne Harrelson (4:16.10) all advanced automatically.

Carrie
Messner, who finished third in the previous day's steeplechase,
finished ninth here in 4:20.12.

Toomey
congratulates Deatherage. Because the second semi ended up being
faster, only five runners advanced from the first semi.

Natalie
Hughes finished seventh in 4:17.34 and did not advance to the final.

Liz
Woodworth, running in her first USA Championship/Trials race, finished
10th in 4:20.45.

In
the second semi-final, Marla Runyan - who had already qualified
for the Olympic team in the 5,000 - set...

...the
early pace. Shalane Flanagan, Lindsey Gallo, and Amy Mortimer followed.

Runyan
continued to lead on the second lap. Runyan represent the U.S. in
the 1,500 at the 2000 Olympics.

Regina Jacobs' suspension for drug use, this event was undergoing
a big change in the U.S.

Jacobs
had won this race the previous five years at the USA Championships,
though her '03 title was taken...

Williams, a national champion for DII Western State, trails the
pack.
