Shalane Flanagan leads the 5,000m at the Olympic Trials with less than one lap to go.
Marla Runyan and Shayne Culpepper ran in third and fourth with one lap to go in the...
...5,000 final. Both were on the Olympic team in the 1,500 in 2000, and both had good closing speed.
Jen Rhines wound up fifth in 15:19.15 and Carrie Tollefson finished sixth in 15:25.55. Both went to the Olympics, but not in the 5,000.
Molly Huddle (7th, 15:37.92) and Missy Buttry (8th, 15:46.21) with one lap to go.
R-L: Melissa Gulli, Sara Bei, and Kristen Nicolini with one lap to go.
All three runners were competing in their first Olympic Trials.
Kathy Newberry finished 13th in 16:14.89.
Marla Runyan led the race coming into the homestretch, but Shayne Culpepper...
...used one strong burst in the last 50 meters to pull ahead and win the race...
...in 15:07.41. Runyan finished second in 15:07.48...
...and Shalane Flanagan held on to grab the third spot on the team...
...with a 15:10.52. Above: Flanagan reacts to her Olympic-qualifying performance.
Runyan later said, "I had no idea that [Culpepper] was thre at the end, but to be honest...
...there was nothing I could have done about it." Culpepper finished fourth in the 1,500 at the 2000 Trials (but did end up running in Sydney).
Two-time Olympian Amy Rudolph was the odd woman out. She ran a great race to finish fourth in 15:13.74, but didn't make the team.
Shalane Flanagan immediately went over to hug her mother, Cheryl Treworgy, a photographer at the Trials and a former world record holder in the marathon.
Jen Rhines congratulates Shalane Flanagan.
Sara Bei finished 11th in 15:52.43 and Melissa Gulli finished 10th in 15:52.30.
Kristen Nicolini finished 12th in 15:53.47.
Shayne Culpepper is joined by her husband, Alan - the winner of the '04 Olympic Marathon Trials - and her son, Cruz.
