Molly Huddle would finish third in the 5,000m fina in 15:58.42.
Providence College's Kim Smith set off after Sonia O'Sullivan's collegiate record.
She went through the first kilometer under 3:00, was right around 6:00 at 2k, and at 9:05 at 3k.
Smith is a native of New Zealand who spent some time at McNeese State before transferring to Providence.
Vicky Gill, running in fourth place, takes a turn at the front of the main pack.
Smith had already run a New Zealand record of 15:18 earlier in the season, she would only have to chop off about one second to break the CR.
Smith lapped everyone in the field except for second-place finisher Alicia Craig. She needed to run her final kilometer in 3:07 to break...
...the record. She had more than four seconds to spare in the end, finishing in 15:14.18, and winning her first NCAA title.
Aside from trailing Smith for the first kilometer, Alicia Craig ran by herself the whole way and went out hard.
Despite running the race the hard way, Craig was able to hold on to second, finishing in 15:45.08.
Brooke Novak of Tennessee went to the lead early on in the distance medley relay.
It was Michigan's Katie Erdman (center) who handed off first, though.
Dee Dee Trotter (not pictured) ran an excellent 400m leg for Tennessee and handed Nicole Cook (pictured) the baton in first place.
Chinny Offor runs the 800m leg for Stanford and Theresa Feldkamp runs for Michigan.
Nicole Cook extended Tennessee's lead significantly, handing Lindsay Hyatt the baton with a huge lead.
Behind Hyatt, the pursuing pack, led by Stanford's Sara Bei, was tightly bunched.
Villanova's Marina Muncan takes a turn in second place.
Lindsay Hyatt managed to hold off the strong challenge from behind, helping Tennessee win in 11:06.07.
Lena Nilsson anchored UCLA to third (11:08.70), Villanova finished fourth (11:10.25), and Sara Bei ran an amazing anchor leg for Stanford, helping them finish second in 11:07.15.
Ann Gaffigan anchored for a Nebraska team which finished 11th in 11:25.08.
