Heat one of two in the 800, L-R: Neisha Bernard-Thomas, Katie Erdman, and Alice Schmidt.
Nicole Cook led early on and held her position until the finish, advancing easily (2:04.03).
The top two runners in each heat automatically advanced, as did the runners with the next four fastest times.
Bernard-Thomas (2:04.33), Schmidt (2:04.64), Erdman (2:04.77) all advanced from the first heat...
...as did Missouri's Ashley Patten (2:07.12). Iowa State's Ada Anderson (2:07.59) did not advance.
Oregon senior Eri MacDonald finished eighth in 2:09.14.
L-R in the second heat: Nikeya Green, Kameisha Bennett, Beata Rudzinska, and Beth Heimann.
Rudzinska, the race's top seed, advanced easily, winning in 2:06.53.
Beth Heimann of Kentucky (2:06.69) also advanced automatically.
Caitlin Reese of Auburn (5th, 2:07.27) missed advancing by a narrow margin.
Leslie Treherne didn't even get a chance to try. She false started (the NCAA doesn't allow false starts) and had to watch from the infield.
Rudzinska and Heimann advanced automatically, Kamille Bratton of Florida (2:07.00) was the only other qualifier out of the second heat.
Tennessee's Lindsay Hyatt led early on in the first heat of two heats in the mile. Wisconsin's Hilary Edmondson also ran up front.
Johanna Nilsson, the defending champion, dominated the race once she began her kick. She advanced in 4:38.26.
Treniere Clement (4:38.73) and Natalie Hughes (4:39.17) both advanced automatically. Edmondson and Marlies Overbeeke advanced on time.
Tiffany McWilliams jumped straight to the lead in the second heat of the mile. She eased up in the final laps, but still hung on to win.
R-L: Lindsey Gallo, Shannon Rowbury, Lauren King, and Jessica Eldridge follow McWilliams.
McWilliams crossed the finish line in 4:39.58. King (4:41.06), Gallo (4:41.10), Meagher (4:41.18), and Rowbury (4:41.27) advanced from a tight finish.
This was about as close as the women's 5,000m got, Kim Smith immediately went to the lead, and only Alicia Craig tried to follow closely.
BYU's Laura Turner would finish ninth in 16:13.80.
