Just past the 200m mark in the 3,000m final, Kim Smith of Providence had already...
...broken away from the field. Even though she had run the 5,000 in record time the previous...
...evening, she appeared to have plenty left here. Michaela Mannova of BYU...
...and Megan Metcalfe of West Virginia led the rest of the field.
The question went from being, "Can Smith win the 3K too?" to "Can Smith set the 3K record too?"
Mannova, one of the top steeplechasers in the NCAA, led the rest of the pack.
Notre Dame's Molly Huddle and Colorado's Renee Metivier run together.
Sara Bei, who had run such a great anchor leg for Stanford in the previous night's DMR, runs in the pack.
Villanova sophomore Marina Muncan, who had also anchored her team's DMR, runs in the pack.
Smith had the following numbers to chase: Tyson Record: 8:55.17 by Sentayehu Ejigu of Ethiopia, Meet Record: 8:54.98 by Stephanie Herbst (1986)...
...and Collegiate Record: 8:53.54 by PattiSue Plumer (1983).
Mannova leads Metcalfe and NAU's Ida Nilsson (another top steeplechaser).
The rest of the field strings out behind Mannova.
Nilsson (older sister of Johanna Nilsson, the mile runner-up) runs in the line.
Renee Metivier.
Penn's Emily Logan.
UTEP's Adriana Pirtea.
Mannova continues to set the pace for the chase pack.
Metcalfe runs in third place.
Molly Huddle doubles back after finishing third in the previous night's 5,000.
