Natalie Hughes of Florida State competes in the mile final.
Just past the 1,000m mark, Tiffany McWilliams continues to run alone out front...
...but defending champion Johanna Nilsson (trailing Hilary Edmondson) begins to give chase.
With just under two laps to go, we were finally...
...able to get McWilliams in a photo with another runner.
Nilsson was moving up, but the question was how strong McWilliams would be when she was caught.
Treniere Clement runs in fourth place with less than 400 meters to go.
Lauren King of Notre Dame leads a pack.
King ran in fifth place with just under two laps to go.
Shannon Rowbury of Duke would finish eighth in 4:41.17.
Notre Dame's Kerry Meagher (7th, 4:40.67) leads Natalie Hughes (5th, 4:39.97).
With one lap to go, Johanna Nilsson had caught up to Tiffany McWilliams.
Treniere Clement of Georgetown ran a PR of 4:35.16 to finish third.
A year ago, in a similar type of race, Nilsson had caught McWilliams and blown by her.
During the outdoor season, another Nilsson, Lena of UCLA, challenged McWilliams like this on the final lap...
...but McWilliams fought back and held her off, setting a new championship record. This time out...
...McWilliams opted for her outdoor strategy and held off Nilsson to win.
McWilliams crossed the line in 4:32.24 to Nilsson's 4:32.72.
Hilary Edmondson faded a bit after following McWilliams early on...
...but she held on to finish fourth in 4:39.21 and earn All-American honors.
