Johanna Nilsson won the first mile prelim. in 4:38.26.
Treniere Clement (2nd, 4:38.73) and Natalie Hughes (3rd, 4:39.17) also advanced automatically.
Hilary Edmondson (4th, 4:39.37) and Marlies Overbeeke (5th, 4:40.46) advanced on time.
Third-place finisher Hughes.
Brooke Patterson (8th, 4:47.89) did not advance to the final.
Tiffany McWilliams finished second in this race a year ago, but won the 2003 NCAA Outdoor 1,500m title.

After watching Tiffany McWilliams run for a year, most NCAA spectators...
...and competitors have come to expect her to lead her races, even if they're just prelims...
...and set a fast pace. This race was no different as McWilliams shot straight to the lead.
Eldridge, a true freshman from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
McWilliams sets the pace.
Shannon Rowbury of Duke runs in third place.
Lindsey Gallo of Michigan runs in second.
Lauren King of Notre Dame and Eldridge of Oklahoma follow Rowbury.
Ingvill Makestad originally hails from Norway and has a 1,500m PR of 4:13.58.
Kerry Meagher was a standout runner for Allentown (PA) Central Catholic High School.
