West Virginia's Tara Struyk (15th, 16:28.88) leads Christine Bolf (left) and Kalin Toedebusch.
Smith ran her final 400 in 63 seconds, finishing in 15:14.18, 3+ seconds under the old collegiate record.
Alicia Craig of Stanford finished second in 15:45.08.
This was about as much emotion as Smith showed on the track Friday night. She told reporters that she...
...had saved up some energy for the next day's 3,000m final, where she was also a favorite.
