Runners prepare for the steeplechase final.
L-R: Audrey Geisler, Jinny Hanifan, Cassie Hunt, and Kassi Andersen.
L-R: Amber Ferner, Ida Nilsson, and Julia Budniak.
The competitors stand on the starting line.
Briana Shook, a notorious front-runner, took the lead on the first lap...
...but NAU's Ida Nilsson went with her. The two major contenders from BYU...
...Kassi Andersen and Michaela Mannova - opted for a more conservative start.
Arkansas' Maureen Scott and NAU's Hanifan.
Shook continues to lead. Unfortunately, the steeplechase was run just when the sun was...
...setting and was directly behind the water barrier.
Nilsson had finished second in this race for the past two years, behind Mannova in 2002...
...and behind Andersen (leading the pack above) in 2003. As a senior, this was her last...
...chance for a title.
Briana Shook redshirted the '03 track season, but won the USA title that year.
Andersen let the leaders go out early on and was never able to make up the necessary ground.
Mannova runs behind Budniak and ahead of Ann Gaffigan.
Butler junior Victoria Mitchell.
Illinois' Cassie Hunt was the only freshman in the final.
Scott is a sophomore at Arkansas.
Shook continues to lead by a narrow margin.
