Katy Trotter of Stanford seemed to be in an abnormal amount of pain and dropped out of the race.
BYU's Kassi Andersen hung back a bit early on.
Shook won in 10:05.18, the fastest time of the day.
Andersen advanced by finishing third in 10:12.76.
Letiwe Marakurwa (9th, 10:33.98), who had run so well in this meet a year ago, was a surprise non qualifier.
Ann Gaffigan had the race of the day, finishing second in 10:12.46. Victoria Mitchell, Cassie Hunt, and Julia Budniak also advanced.
Ida Nilsson (left) and Michaela Mannova take over the early lead in the second steeplechase prelim.

In the 10,000m final, BYU's Laura Turner shot out to a sizeable lead early on. It wasn't so much that she was running quickly, but that others were running conservatively in the humidity and heat.
