Nicole Cook (2nd, 2:07.01) was the most surprising casualty of the 800m rounds.
Stanford's Ashley Freeman finished fifth in 2:10.54 and did not advance.
In the women's 1,500 prelims, Tiffany McWilliams, the 2003 outdoor 1,500 and 2004...
...indoor mile champion, jumped out to a lead on the first lap.
Stanford freshman Arianna Lambie was the only runner who broke away from the pack and tried...
...to follow McWilliams' faster pace.
McWilliams' teammate, Jennifer McPherson, led the rest of the pack.

Tiffany McWilliams runs on her own out front.
McWilliams had suffered a surprising loss to Lindsey Gallo at the regional meet, but was still the favorite heading in.
Arianna Lambie runs in second place.
McPherson and Duke's Shannon Rowbury run 3-4.

The top four runners in each of the two prelims, plus the runners with the next four fastest times, would advance.

McWilliams held a sizeable lead with one lap to go.
McWilliams said later that she was running on an injured foot.
Her coach, Al Schmidt, wanted her to take a week off to let it heal...

With one lap to go, Virginia Tech's Marlies Overbeeke and Edmondson led the rest of the field.
