Olympic Champion Maria de Lourdes Mutola of Mozambique waves to the crowd.
Spectator favorite here was, of course, Canada's own Diane Cummins who ran a personal best 1:59.49 to finish 5th here. Halfway through the race, Letitia Vriesde of Surinam leads, followed by Stephanie Graf, Mutola (with Cummins tucked in behind her), Germany's Ivonne Teichmann, Great Britain's Kelly Holmes, Spain's Mayte Martinez and Kenya's Faith Macharia. The crowd cheers wildly as the runners come off the final turn, led by Graf and Vriesde with Mutola right behind.
Graf (center) held a slight lead in the home stretch.
Even with about one stride to go, Graf appeared to lead... ...But she couldn't hold off the late charge of Mutola... ...Who took the race in 1:57.17 over Graf's 1:57.20 and Vriesde's 1:57.35.
