Heat one of the 5,000m prelims gets underway.

Heading into this race, Marla Runyan had never run a 5,000m track race slower than 15:08, but she ran 15:24.30 here for 9th and did not advance to the final.
Great Britain's Hayley Yelling ran 15:59.39 for 16th. Courtney Babcock of Canada ran 15:46.72 for 14th. After threatening to boycott the 5,000m race if Olga Yegorova was allowed to compete (having tested positive for EPO), Gabriela Szabo (center) opted to remain in the race.
Kathy Butler, formerly of Canada and now of Great Britain, was the first non-qualifier, missing by less than a second with her 7th-place 15:20.78 finish.
The start of heat two. Yelena Zadorozhnaya (3rd, 15:11.63) and Teresa Recio (8th, 15:19.81) lead the pack. Elva Dryer of the U.S. finished 11th in 15:26.04).
 
Joanne Pavey of Great Britain (2nd, 15:10.62) leads Benita Willis of Australia (7th, 15:17.93).
#876 Olivera Jevtic of Yugoslavia (14th, 15:29.61) takes a turn in the lead. And yet another set of leaders with #346 Irina Mikitenko of Germany (5th, 15:12.63) an #498 Rose Cheruiyot (4th, 15:12.04) up front.
