Heat one of three in the 1,500m rounds. L-R: Lamberte Nyabamikazi, Irina Krakoviak, Veerle Dejaeghere, Elena Buhaianu-Iagar, Iryna Lishchynska and Sureyya Ayhan.
Krakoviak follows Sydney Olympic Gold Medallist Nouria Merah-Benida of Algeria, who barely snuck into the next round, earning the final qualifying spot. Carla Sacramento and Suzy Favor-Hamilton run together. Natalia Rodriguez leads Veerle Dejaeghere.
Elena Buhaianu-Iagar did not advance to the final after finishing 10th in 4:24.72. Lamberte Nyabamikazi's 11th-place 4:31.11 was a new National Record for Burundi. Elisa Bagnini (12th, 4:40.01) also set a new National Record for San Marino. Heat Two, L-R: Lixin Lan, Gabriela Szabo, Helen Pattinson, Lidia Chojecka, Regina Jacobs, Natalya Gorelova, Kathleen Friedrich and Leah Pells.
Szabo went on to win heat two in 4:10.77. Jacobs leads Szabo. Gorelova, who has a season-best time of 3:59.70. Evelyn Guerra finished 11th in 4:44.69.
Lixin Lan finished 7th here in 4:12.92 but has a lifetime best of 3:53.97. Gorelova and Chojecka leading Jacobs and Friedrich. Helen Pattinson managed to sneak into the semis with a 4:13.06 9th-place finish. U.S. Champion Regina Jacobs dropped back with a lap to go...
...And then dropped out completely with an ankle injury on the final turn. Heat Three, L-R: Heidi Jensen, Olga Nelyubova, Violeta Szekely and Georgie Clarke. Sonia Lopes finished 12th in 5:13.80. Just as the heat began, a steady rain started to fall. L-R: Alesya Turova, Szekely, Jensen and Nelyubova.
L-R: Clarke, Hayley Tullett, Turova, Szekely, Jensen and Nelyubova. Great Britain's Hayley Tullett finished 2nd in this heat with a 4:13.60. Australian teenager Georgie Clarke just missed qualifying for the semis with a 9th-place 4:15.31. Clarke and the U.S.'s Sarah Schwald, who did advance to the final with her 4th-place 4:13.69.
