Men's Photos

The pack of four - Shibui, Zakharova, Tosa and Simon - heads through 35k. (And then the photo truck broke away to get back to the stadium in time for the finish.) Lidia Simon and Reiko Tosa battled it out over the final kilometers with Simon pulling out the five-second victory in 2:26:01. Simon led the Romanian team to 3rd in the team competition (with the top three from each country scoring). The Japanese fan support on the streets of Edmonton and in the stadium was impressive and Reiko Tosa's 2nd place finish led the Japanese to the team title.
An elated Simon collapses to the track. Zakharova (2:26:18) comes in close behind for the bronze medal. Yoko Shibui (left) finished 4th and then congratuated her victorious teammate. Lidia Simon does a victory lap.
Florence Barsosio of Kenya finished 6th (2:28:36) and was handed a bucket, just in case, at the finish line.
Tosa and Shibui pose for their many fans. Jill Gaitenby continued her excellent year and was the first U.S. runner in, finishing 32nd in 2:39:20. Gaitenby ran with Canadians Sandy Jacobson and Tina Connelly much of the way and therefore got to hear the crowds at their best..
Tina Connelly, who finished 20th in the 10,000m earlier in the week, was the first Canadian into the stadium, finishing 33rd in 2:40:16. Sandy Jacobson, an Edmonton native, had the entire city behind her (including the Japanese and Canadian fans in the stadium) and she handled the pressure well with a 34th place 2:40:24. Tina Connelly and the other four Canadians in the race earned some of the biggest cheers of the day. Michelle Simonaitis of the U.S. ran well for 41st (2:46:20).

Rosa Gutierrez (above) and Simonaitis worked together for much of the race with Gutierrez dropping back a bit in the final 10k to finish 42nd in 2:49:08 -- not bad considering she only had 10 days notice that she was on the team. Rachel Cook had a rough day and fought the urge to drop out. In the end, she finished 45th in 2:53:21.
