The start of the 1,500 final.
Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina immediately takes the lead.
Flanagan had indicated after the prelims that leading from the gun may be the only way for her to win.
UCLA's Lena Nilsson was the only runner in the field to go with Flanagan.
R-L on the outside are Christin Wurth, Courtney Inman, Londa Bevins, Natalie Hughes and Amy Mortimer.

...Nilsson runs right on her heels.

Amy Mortimer starts to work on closing the gap between the two leaders and the pack.
Mortimer, a junior at Kansas State, runs in third.

Nilsson had the fastest qualifying time coming in, as well as one of the top 800 times in the NCAA.
Nilsson and Flanagan with less than a lap to go.
Sagan, known for her great kick, looks like she'll have her work cut out for her finishing any higher than third.
Sagan and Mortimer run in third and fourth.
Nilsson, using a great kick of her own, pulled away on the last lap...
...to win by more than two seconds in 4:12.60.
