The pack heads around the first turn.
Lena Nilsson displayed impressive leg speed on the last lap, winning in 4:23.42.
Because of the slow pace, all of the time qualifiers ended up coming out of the second heat.
Natalie Hughes (4:24.23), Heather Sagan (4:24.81) and Londa Bevins (4:25.41) were the other qualifiers.
Megan Metcalfe (5th, 4:26.19) just missed advancing.
Katie Eisenmenger finished eighth in 4:27.72.
Shalane Flanagan claps as her teammate Erin Donohue is announced.
Christin Wurth and Amy Mortimer at the start of heat two in the 1,500 prelims.

North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan leads the pack 300 meters into the race, on her outside are Bevins and Inman.

Flanagan is known as a front-runner and would assure that the pace did not lag here.
R-L: King, Inman, Malindi Elmore and Donohue.
Amy Mortimer hangs back behind the pack.
Flanagan continues to lead.
Also in the pack is #401 Bethany Brewster, a junior at Wisconsin.
#320 Maurica Carlucci of Stanford moves up on the outside with 400 meters remaining.
The pack stretches out behind Flanagan.
R-L: Mortimer, Elmore, Brewster, Donohue, Inman and BYU's Kassie Anderson.
Down the home stretch, it's a tight race.
