Gerber won the second prelim. in 2:07.24.	The top three runners in each heat plus the runners with the next four fastest times would advance.	Beth Heimann of Kentucky (2nd, 2:07.77) and Bratton (3rd, 2:07.89) grabbed the other two automatic spots.	Dewey (4th, 2:08.22) and Joannes (5th, 2:08.31) did not advance.	Bratton catches her breath.

This was the first time that preliminaries were contested in the 800m at the NCAA Championships.	In past years, they just held semi-finals and finals.
