The
course, at Morley Field in San Diego's Balboa Park was made up of
two figure eights.
The
course record is 16:39, set by Melody Fairchild in 1990.

R-L:
West Girls Rachel Bryan, Ruth Graham, Amber Harper and Heather Wood.
L-R:
Jamie Geissler, Wood, Harper and Graham.

from the West wore blue, the South red, the Northeast green and
the Midwest gray.
L-R:
Caitlin Chock, Geissler, Wood and Harper.
The
32 runners head off on the course, which was unanimously considered
tougher than the Orlando course.
Approaching
the 800 meter mark, Sara Powell, the eighth-place finisher in the
Northeast leads the way.
Powell
would later say that she ran the first 800 meters and the last 800
meters quickly.
Powell's
Northeast teammates Caitlin McTague, Nicole Blood and Laura Cummings
lead the chase.
R-L:
McTague, Blood, Cummings, Zoe Nelson and Rachel Bryan.
Early
in the race, the team battle appeared to be between the Northeast
and the West.
Also
visible in the tightly-bunched pack are Amber Harper, Ari Lambie
and Heidi Magill.
The
West team runs together.
With
Lambie feeling under the weather, Zoe Nelson was considered a strong
favorite to win the race.
In
2000 when Sara Bei won this race, she was nearly in last place at
the mile mark; history has shown that patience can pay off in this
race.
