In the 25th mile, right around the spot Deena Kastor had passed Blake Russell...
...Colleen De Reuck caught Kastor and essentially blew by her. Kastor later attributed her...
...difficulties in the late miles to an unidentified fueling error, and said that she would be...
...looking into what caused the problem and working to correct it. In the meantime, De Reuck ran one of the...
...greatest marathons of her career, going on to win in 2:28:25 and qualify for her first U.S. (but fourth overall) Olympic team.
Kastor was able to hold on to second place, finishing in 2:29:38.
Jen Rhines finally outran her marathon troubles. She set an 11+ minute PR of 2:29:57...
...and passed Blake Russell in the final 400 meters to grab the third spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
Kastor and De Reuck congratulate Rhines as she crosses the finish line.
Russell showed that she will be one to watch in the future and hung on to finish fourth (2:30:32).
Magdalena Lewy Boulet finished fifth in 2:30:50 and said later that she was "heartbroken."
Heather Hanscom had what was probably the biggest breakthrough of anyone in the race.
She finished sixth in 2:31:53, breaking her PR by 6:06 in only her second marathon.
Defending USA Champion Sara Wells ran well despite having to spend much of the winter...
...cross training. She finished seventh in a PR of 2:33:15.
Deeja Youngquist, like Russell, Hanscom, and Wells, was running her...
...second-ever marathon here. She finished eighth in 2:34:21.
Susannah Beck, despite being the 12th fastest starter, did not get a lot of pre-race attention.
She beat her seed in finishing ninth (2:34:44) here.
Jenny Spangler, the '96 Trials champion, was the first masters runner and 10th overall (2:36:30).
