Blake Russell ran in third place two hours and three minutes into the race...
...after leading for the first 17+ miles.
Jen Rhines ran in fifth place at this point, about equal distance from...
...Sylvia Mosqueda (fourth) and Magdalena Lewy Boulet (sixth). Mosqueda dropped out...
...late in the race. Deena Kastor continued to lead 2:08 into the race...
...but it soon became evident that Colleen De Reuck was gaining ground.
Kastor began to run out of gas and De Reuck caught her in the 25th mile...
...in essentially the same spot as Kastor had passed Russell on the previous lap.
De Reuck pulled away with surprising ease...
...and powered to her first U.S. Olympic Trials win in 2:28:35.
Holding back early on paid off for De Reuck, she went through...
...the halfway point in 1:13:41 and ran her second half in 1:14:54.
De Reuck's time was a women's Trials record and she earned...
...$35,000 for her efforts.
Kastor experienced "the wall" for the first time in a marathon, but she was able...
...to hold on to second place and finish in a time of 2:29:38.
Kastor said that she believed her problem was nutritional and that she...
...would be researching it throughly before the Athens...
...Olympic Marathon. She also announced her plans to run the 2004 ING New York City Marathon a few days later.
Jen Rhines caught Blake Russell in the final 400 meters.
