Deena Kastor (left) caught up to Blake Russell in the 18th mile...
...and quickly put a gap on her.
Kastor got a thumbs up from former training partner Jeanne Hennessy as she ran by.
Sylvia Mosqueda passes Kastor going the other way.
Kastor appeared as if she was on her way to an easy victory.
Kastor had probably trained more than anyone else in the race.
From January to mid-March, Kastor ran 120+ miles per week...
...with a high of 134 miles. With a PR (2:21:16) that was also the...
...American Record, she was a heavy favorite to win. She was hoping to do whatever...
...it took to make the team and then recover as quickly as possible for Athens.
Colleen De Reuck, on the other hand, would turn 40...
...10 days after the Trials. She had represented...
...South Africa at the three previous Olympic Games...
...but was hoping to make her first U.S. Olympic team here.
A year ago at this race, which served as the USA Championship, De Reuck...
...finished second to Sara Wells in 2:37:41 after suffering from hypothermia.
This time, however, De Reuck looked strong running in second place just over two hours into the race.
Blake Russell ran in third place with less than 30 minutes to go, and her lead...
...over the fourth place runner was big enough that it looked like she would have a good shot...
...at holding on to that third and final spot on the Olympic team.
