Heading by Marcus Garvey Park, just past 22 miles, Joyce Chepchumba pushes the pace and Lyubov Denisova stays on her heels.
This was Chepchumba's fourth time running New York. Her previous best finish was a third place in 1996.
Just after the 23 mile mark, Chepchumba began to put some distance on Denisova.
Chepchumba had a lot of big race experience and success coming in; she won the London Marathon in 1997 and 1999 and Chicago in 1999.
Her experience paid off here as she waited patiently for the first 20 miles of the race before showing her cards.
Chepchumba gave herself an early birthday present here; she turned 32 three days after the race.
Chepchumba spends much of the year training in Germany. She has an 11-year-old son, Collins.
As she passes 24 miles in Central Park, Chepchumba looks strong and confident.
She went on to win her first New York City Marathon in 2:25:56
Chepchumba ran negative splits: 1:14:16 for the first half and 1:11:40 for the second.
Denisova finished 21 seconds back in 2:26:17.
Jevtic, bleeding at the knees from her fall, managed to hang on to third place (2:26:44).
Jevtic, 25, made a strong showing in her first marathon and will be one to watch in the future.
Esther Kiplagat finished fourth in 2:27:00.
Marla Runyan, also running her first marathon, finished fifth in 2:27:10.
Runyan's time made her the second-fastest American marathoner this year, not far behind Deena Drossin.
Kerryn McCann, also shaken by the collision with Jevtic, finished seventh in 2:27:51.
McCann had looked really strong before the fall and could only wonder what might have been.
Lornah Kiplagat hung in the race for a long time before fading in the final miles.
Kiplagat finished eighth in 2:28:41.
