...But
because Milena Glusac had prior experience running in New York,
some speculated that her move might be legitimate.
|
However,
she didn't get very far away before the pack sucked her back in
again.
|
Heading
up First Avenue in Manhattan, the pack had been whittled down to
eight women.

Ludmila Petrova, Lornah Kiplagat, Kerryn McCann and Glusac.

L-R:
E. Kiplagat, Jevtic, L. Kiplagat, McCann and Glusac.
|
Just
past seventeen miles.
|
In
the 19th mile Joyce Chepchumba (left) starts to look restless. Runyan
catches up to the pack while Glusac drops off the back.

Chepchumba
leads the pack and Runyan attaches herself to the back.

Around
20 miles, Lyubov Denisova pushes the pace
|
Denisova
continues to push and Runyan starts to drop off the back of the
pack again.
|
Heading
over the Willis Avenue Bridge, McCann, Jevtic, Chepchumba and Denisova
lead the way.
|
Coming
off the bridge, Jevtic and McCann got tangled up and went down hard,
which essentially took both of them out of contention.
|
Whether
or not they even noticed the fall, Chepchumba and Denisova took
the opportunity to break away.

|
|
Jevtic
bounced up pretty quickly, McCann took a little longer, saying later
that she had had the wind knocked out of her.
|
Chepchumba
pushes the pace, Denisova and E. Kiplagat follow.
|
Jevtic
(left) attempts to make her way back up to the leaders.
|
Chepchumba
and Denisova lead Jevtic and E. Kiplagat.
|
Just
before the 35k mark, it looks to be a two-woman race.
