As
the leaders head up Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn, the pack is still
sizeable.

runners pass through a water station, just past the seven-mile mark.

pack approaches an elite fluids station, where each runner has her
own special bottle.

Lornah
Kiplagat leads the way through the station. Each athlete's bottle
is decorated so they can pick it out in a hurry.

of the athletes who expect to take longer to finish start the race

Shortly
before the nine mile mark, Jane Salumae, Kim Fitchen, and defending
champion Margaret Okayo have dropped off the back of the pack.

Silvia
Skvortsova continues to set the pace as Kim Fitchen and Margaret
Okayo struggle to catch back up to the pack.

The
pack, including Skvortsova, Runyan, O'Sullivan, Olivera Jevtic,
Ludmila Petrova, Kerryn McCann, Lornah Kiplagat, Esther Kiplagat,
Joyce Chepchumba and Zinaida Semyonova turns
onto Bedford Avenue.

In
the 10th mile, Sylvia Mosqueda and Margaret Okayo try to work their
way back up to the lead pack.

Skvortsova,
O'Sullivan and Jevtic head up the pack. O'Sullivan was running her
first serious marathon while Jevtic was running her first marathon,
period.

At
various points throughout the race, Skvortsova encouraged the pack
to go faster, but no one seemed to want to go with her.

Just
before the 12-mile mark, Glusac, O'Sullivan, Jevtic, L. Kiplagat
and Runyan head around a turn.

was instructed to lead the race at least though the halfway point.

Skvortsova
leads the way and everyone in the pack is still looking relatively
relaxed.

pack hit the halfway point in 1:14:15, well off record pace.

off the Queensboro Bridge, Milena Glusac made a bold move for the
lead.

at the NYC Marathon are often advised not to get too excited on
First Avenue where the crowd support is immense...
