Top-seeded Colorado freshman Sara Gorton jogs out onto the track for the women's 3,000.
Missouri's Ann Marie Brooks (who carried Missouri to a DMR victory the night before) and Wisconsin's Bethany Brewster wait for the start.
Boston College's Shannon Smith.
NCAA cross country runner-up Sabrina Monro of Montana.
L-R: Lilli Kleinmann, Sara Day, Sheela Agrawal, Gorton, Brewster, Monro and Sharolyn Shields.
Gorton and Duke's Agrawal run near the front of the pack.
Michigan standout Katie Jazwinski.
Arkansas-Little Rock freshman Ida Nilsson had a good race, finishing 5th in 9:19.41.
Gorton and Robertson (doubling back from her mile win) lead the race with Smith, Monro and Brooks close behind.
Katie Ryan of Boson College.
After the race, Gorton's coach Mark Wetmore said she was a victim of bad coaching after he gave her too aggressive of a race plan for the cold that she's been battling.
Robertson was understandably unable to stay with the leaders as the 3,000 started just 80 minutes after the mile.
Day (8th, 9:23.60) and Stanford's Elena Villarreal (12th, 9:36.65).
Shannon Smith stayed near the front throughout and took over the lead with three laps to go.
Lilli Kleinmann (with Katie Ryan) was never a factor in the race after suffering from dehydration the night before. One minute she was running along in the pack...
...And just a few strides later she dropped off the track and collapsed. Read Kleinmann's account of her NCAA weekend.
Smith, a fifth year senior at BC, did not run NCAA cross country this year because she was out of eligibility.
Smith became BC's first-ever national champion and broke the 3,000m school record by nine seconds with her 9:11.25.
The 7th seed heading into the race, Smith was hardly considered one of the favorites.
Ann Marie Brooks capped off an excellent weekend of running with her runner-up finish (9:12.43).
Monro finished 10th in 9:25.88.
