Jill
Snyder, a Wake Forest senior, waits for the start of the race.
She finished 8th in 4:45.29.
Tracy
Robertson was extremely popular with the home crowd.
L-R:
Shalane Flanagan, Korene Hinds, Mary Jayne Harrelson, Tracy Robertson,
Katie Crabb and Michaela Mannova on the first lap.
Robertson
expressed fear about falling (as she had at the SEC Championships)
so she stayed near the front of the pack the whole way.
Kansas
State standout Korene Hinds.
Freshman
Shalane Flanagan entered the meet with the #1 ranking but just
never got up near the front of this race. Like many, she had run
two hard miles in the prelims. and DMR the night before.
When
Robertson and Harrelson pulled away from the field, it was clear
that it would become a two-woman race... until Harrelson limped
off the track with 150 meters to go.
Stanford's
Lauren Fleshman leads the chase pack.
L-R:
Mannova (a freshman), Colorado's Lesley Higgins, and Crabb.
An
elated Robertson won by more than three seconds on her home track,
running 4:39.10.
Higgins
ran a Jodie Hughes-esque race (coming from behind) to finish second
in 4:42.36.
Fleshman
(right, 4:43.52) edged out Mannova (4:43.57) for third.
UNC's
Alice Schmidt on the starting line of the 800.
L-R:
Schmidt, Patricia Pearson, Natalie Watson, Svetlana Badrankova
and Tanya Jarrett.
Schmidt
runs at the tail end of the pack.
L-R:
Pearson, Watson,, Ashley Wysong, Badrankova, Aimee Teteris (mostly
obscured), Schmidt and Laura Gerber.
A
little jostling between Rice's Teteris and Tanya Jarrett of Texas.
When
Badrankova went, she really went -- winning in 2:06.58 over Schmidt
(2:08.47).
