In the 20th mile of the race, Catherine Ndereba (left) and Elfenesh Alemu ran together.
Ndereba seemed to be the one setting the pace, but Alemu was holding on.
Ndereba went on to win her third Boston Marathon title in 2:24:27. She also won the race in 2000 and 2001.
Alemu finished second in 2:24:43.
The 16 second differential between the top two tied the closest women's race ever in Boston.
Ndereba has been involved in the top three closest races in Boston (2004, 2000, and 2002).
Olivera Jevtic was well behind the leaders by the 20th mile.
Jevtic of Serbia went on to finish third in 2:27:34.
The temperature at the start of the race was approximately 83 degrees, and it rose to 85...
...by the finish. It was the hottest Boston Marathon since 1987.
Jevtic handled the conditions well and was only about two minutes off her 2:25:23 PR.
Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia ran in fourth place in the 20th mile and held her spot until the...
...finish, crossing the line in 2:30:16. Prokopcuka holds Latvian records in nearly every...
...distance event. We were positioned across the street from an unofficial water stop...
...and nearly every elite runner who went by took water. The athletes seemed to be trying...
...to take in as many fluids as possible, regardless of the source or type.
Prokopcuka's husband, Aleksander Prokopcuk holds the Latvian men's record in the marathon.
Lyubov Denisova ran in fifth place in the 20th mile but wound up sixth in 2:31:17.
Denisova finished second here a year ago and also finished second at the 2002 New York City Marathon.
Denisova, now 32 has a young daughter and is married to her coach, Maxim Denisov.
