Art Gallery of Prince Albert - E. A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts
May 23: Gala Opening, 8:00pm. For more information call the Gallery at 763-7080. "Biennial SCAM" is curated by The SCAM Collective which consists of : Brenda Barry Byrne, Estevan; Kim Houghtaling, Swift Current; Joanne Marion, Medicine Hat; Chris Reid, Brandon; Heather Smith, Moose Jaw; and Ulrike Veith, Prince Albert. "Biennial SCAM" is the second collaborative project between prairie galleries, bringing together emerging contemporary artists and art practices from the three prairie provinces; Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The SCAM curators met and discussed common issues faced by each of the (rural) galleries, in particular accessibility to new works/media created in each of our provinces, resulting in the touring exhibit "Biennial SCAM". The selection of artworks/artists was determined by current art production in artists' studios throughout the prairies; the forces driving contemporary art expression on the prairies; current trends in content or media on the prairies; works that fall outside the traditional definition of medium or genre, and are marginal to mainstream canons. Artists included in this exhibit are: Tammi Campbell, Suzanne Franks, Valerie Hunter Cullen, Jeff Nachtigall, John Noestheden, Wendy Peart, Lynn Richardson, Anna Scott, Theo Sims and Myron Turner. The exhibit will travel to each of the six participating galleries; Art Gallery of Southwest Manitoba (Man.), Estevan Art Gallery & Museum (Sask.), Art Gallery of Swift Current (Sask.), Moose Jaw Art Museum (Sask.), The Art Gallery of Prince Albert (Sask.) and Medicine Hat Museum and Art Gallery (Alta.). To compliment the touring exhibit, a catalogue & web site will be published profiling the works of the artists featured in "Biennial SCAM". The catalogue will include the overall curatorial statement and a critical essay by David Garneau. Visit the "Biennial SCAM" web site hosted by the Saskatchewan Arts Board: http://www.artsboard.sk.ca/SCAM/scammain.shtml Exhibitions around the province: |
