index --- NEWS Events

You are reading "City Lights News Milan" (Milano: Luci della Citta'), the recently born monthly newsletter on Milan's cultural life and other events.

If you visit our city, "City Lights News Milan" will be a useful companion for you and help you discover what Milan has to offer. Our newsletter is conceived as an easy-to-consult guide with chapters on concerts, operas, movies, exhibitions and much more. Being online, you can update yourself before leaving home to better plan your time in Milan or, if you wish, reserve seats for shows you do not want to miss. "City Lights News Milan" will give you fresh information every month. In each issue, you will find a short article on a couple of events we have chosen from the monthly calendar.

This month, the work of the international masters of photography have been gathered in Milan making our city the meeting point of images coming from all over the world. Museums and private galleries propose several interesting photo shows from reportage to portrait. We have selected the following:

Hollywood and the myth of Marilyn : Until September 1st, Palazzo Reale will host "A Night with Marilyn", an exhibition of 73 photos taken by Douglas Kirkland in 1961, just nine months before the diva's tragic and mysterious death. The pictures, depicting the actress - already a legend in Kennedy's America - wrapped in silk sheets and in a soft-golden light, were published in the 25th anniversary issue of Look Magazine. The show's itinerary is divided into two parts: the first one shows big colour portraits of Marilyn while the other is more focused on back stage, black and white images.

A look at our Past : Until September 8th, at Palazzo Reale you could see "Robert Capa : i volti della Storia" ("Robert Capa : The Faces of History") dedicated to the memory of one of the most talented photo reporters ever existed. Capa, the founder of Magnum Photo Agency, who spent most of his 25 year career documenting the tragedy of war, was also fascinated by the search for the "human factor", as he used to describe the very element of his numerous portraits. Capa took thousands of portraits both of ordinary and famous people. The exhibition succeeds in showing a large selection of "Capa's faces" from the leaders in World War II and the Spanish Civil War to the victims of those conflicts. A special section is dedicated to Capa's pictures of his best friends, such as Ingrid Bergam, Pablo Picasso, Matisse, and Hemingway.

Today's Africa : Until July 15th, Spazio Oberdan (Piazza Oberdan. Hours: Tue, Sat and Sun from 10 AM to 7.30 PM; Wed and Thu from 10 AM to 10 PM) will host the forth edition of the African Photographic Encounters, by the title of "Intimate Memories of the New Millennium". The 100-picture show falls into the tradition of classical reportage and features the work of a number of talented African photographers depicting the beauty, the magic and the hardships of life in Africa. Do not miss it!

Latin American Women : World famous Mexican artist Flor Garduno shows her portraits of Mexican women at the Galleria Carla Sozzani (Corso Como, 10 - tel. 02.65.35.319) until June 23rd. Garduno, whose powerful images capture the spirit of her beloved motherland, was born in 1957 in Mexico City and later became the most talented student of the Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo. She won several international awards, published 4 books and had one hundred personal shows around the world. Important museums, such as the MOMA in New York and the Stiftung fur Photographie in Zurich, have purchased her work.

Waiting for the World Soccer Cup : Until June 15th, the Galleria Credito Valtellinese (Corso Magenta, 59 - tel. 02.48.00.80.15) will host "Soccer" featuring pictures by the Italian photographer Marco Anelli. Interesting and dynamic images of the soccer's world and its stars.

Once again this month "City Lights News" suggests a week-end itinerary to discover some of the most picturesque areas of Milan while wandering around the city's street markets. Milan offers a wide choice of alternatives. If you are an enthusiast of antiques, the right place for you is Brera Antique Open Air Market (Mercatino dell'Antiquariato di Brera) held every third Sunday of each month in Brera, one of the fanciest and most elegant neighbourhoods of Milan (Via Fiori Chiari; take the subway, yellow line, to Montenapoleone). Walking around old alleys, framed by beautiful buildings, just one block from Brera Art Gallery, you can buy China pieces, British silverware and furniture, lovely Italian objects designed in the Twenties, Thirties, Forties and Fifties, lamps and prints, antique and signed costume jewelry. Once you have done with your shopping, you can enjoy these warm Spring days in one of the numerous outdoor restaurants, ice-cream parlours and cafes located around the market area.

The last Sunday of each month 350 exhibitors, coming from all over Italy, gather at the Antique Market on the Naviglio Grande (Alzaia Naviglio Grande. Take the subway, line 2 to Porta Genova. Information: tel. 02.89.40.99.71). Throughout the years the Navigli area - this charming corner of the city crowded with restaurants specialized in local cuisine, pizzerias, cafes, ice-cream parlours, shops, bookstores and art galleries - has preserved its Bohemian atmosphere and original character. The antique fair offers a variety of oddities and if you feel like going curio-hunting you are in the right spot. Going from one stall to the other, you could find antique toys, porcelain dolls, paintings, little sculptures, ceramics, pieces of furniture, books, postcards, lace, Italian, Asian or African handicrafts, and - if you are lucky - some interesting pieces of Italian design from the Forties and the Fifties. Most stores and art galleries in the Navigli area remain open on market day.

On the second Sunday of each month, from 9 A.M. until sunset, the Antique Fair at the Lido (Piazzale Lotto, take the subway, line 2, to Lotto) smaller than the previous markets, offers you another opportunity to look for antiques.

If you are a stamp collector, you might want to take a look at the Stamp Collecting Market (Mercato Filatelico) held every Sunday morning at Via Armorari (take the subway, line 1 or line 3 to Duomo), very close to Piazza Duomo and Palazzo Reale.

The most traditional Milanese flea market, taking place every Saturday at the Darsena of Viale D'Annunzio from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M., is called the Senigallia Fair (la Fiera di Senigallia). Here you can find a great variety of goods: shoes, imported textiles, food, jewellery, clothing, used bikes, kitchen tools and so on. It is possible to bargain.

Do not forget to check the BreraHotels.com web site for very interesting week-end rates. When booking your room, you can also reserve Riciclo®, the first bicycle designed especially for city use. Hotel guests can use it free of charge for short trips around the downtown area, and at the same time discover a new way to experience and learn more about Milan.

During your week-end in Milan, you may want to combine shopping with Art. Until June 2nd, "La Fornarina", the celebrated portrait by Raffaello depicting his beloved muse, will be on display at the Fondazione Arte e Civiltà (Via Sabotino, 26 - tel. 02.58.30.36.35). One of the most beautiful paintings of all times arrives in Milan, after Urbino and Paris, to celebrate its recent restoration. The curator of the exhibition has organized an itinerary to help understand the aesthetic and historical context of this masterpiece. This itinerary consists of explanatory panels, pictures and x-rays to document the recent discoveries made during restoration. Other less famous, but related, works are on display with "La Fornarina". For example, three original etchings from the 18th century by Rastaini, Fontana and Cunego; five manuscripts of sonnets written by Raffaello, some Raffaello drawings as well as two magnificent paintings of the Cinquecento: la "Fornarina Borghese" by Raffaellino del Colle and the "Madonna Hertz" by Giulio Romano. Reservation is strongly recommended.

Along with Raffaello, Milan in June offers other two exceptional art shows both held at Palazzo Reale (the Royal Palace). The first one by the title "Neoclassicism in Italy from Tiepolo to Canova" offers the opportunity to visit the magnificent and recently restored rooms, some of which were badly damaged in 1943. Four hundred pieces are displayed, many by important artists such as Goya, Tiepolo, Canova, Bellotto, David and Angelica Kauffmann, Appiani, Valadier and other masters of Neoclassicism. These artists, inspired by the beauty of classical antiquity, managed to enrich and transform the powerful European courts of the mid-1700's and, at the same time, revolutionize the art world. The exhibition shows masterpieces coming from several important European museums (the Uffizi Gallery, the Ermitage, the Vatican Museums, The Capodimonte Collection, etc) and from a number of Italian royal palaces, such as the ones in Caserta and in Stupinigi, the Pitti Palace in Florence, and the Royal Palace in Turin. The well designed itinerary offers a complete and clear historical perspective on the second half of the 18th century, a period characterized by major political and social changes.

"New York Renaissance" is the title of the long-awaited exhibition, also hosted at Palazzo Reale, until September 15, showing 95 pieces from the Whitney Museum of New York. The event was made possible through the generous cooperation of the famous New York museum, established in 1930 to promote modern art in America, and now undergoing major restoration. The masterpieces by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Georgia O'Keeffee, Edward Hopper, Jasper Jones, Rauschenberg and other artists have crossed the Atlantic Ocean to bring one of the most significant chapter of American art history to Milan. Do not miss it!

If you wish to visit The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, one of the world's most celebrated paintings, on display in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie, 2; take the subway, line 1 to Conciliazione or take the bus n° 24 to Corso Magenta), remember that reservation is required (for reservations call 02.89.42.11.46) and costs € 1. BreraHotels.com offer their clients a booking service on request. Schedule: Tue-Sun 8 AM - 7.30 PM. Monday closed. Admission: € 6,50; reduced 3,25; free for European citizens under 18 years or over 65. Guided tours in English: from Tue-Sun 9.30 AM and 3.30 PM. Admission : € 3,25 and € 62 for groups (max 25 people). Audio guides are available in English, Japanese, French, German and Spanish € 2,50 (one person) or € 4,50 (2 people).

If you wish to go to La Scala, please keep in mind that the opera and the ballet company of La Scala are currently performing at the newly built Teatro Degli Arcimboldi (Via dell'Innovazione, at Bicocca district) while the old La Scala theatre is being completely renovated. How to get to the new Teatro degli Arcimboldi: there is a shuttle bus running on every performance evening from Piazza del Duomo from about 6:45 P.M. to 7:15 P.M. Return at the end of each show. Tickets: regular bus ticket (€ 1 each way).

The English version of "City Lights News Milan" differs slightly from the Italian version. Theatre plays spoken in Italian are not included in the English version. In their place, original movies are listed.

"City Lights News Milan" wishes you a pleasant stay in Milan. See you again in July with our next issue.

Please note that occasionally, show time scheduled may change or events may be canceled.
