For information and publication of events: Paola Sconzo index --- NEWS
You are reading the first English issue of "City Lights News Milan" (Milano: Luci della Citta'), the recently born monthly newsletter on Milan's cultural life and other events. If you visit our city, "City Lights News Milan" will be a useful companion for you and help you discover what Milan has to offer. Our newsletter is conceived as an easy-to-consult guide with chapters on concerts, operas, movies, exhibitions and much more. Being online, you can update yourself before leaving home to better plan your time in Milan or, if you wish, reserve seats for shows you do not want to miss. "City Lights News Milan" will give you fresh information every month. In each issue, you will find a short article on a couple of events we have chosen from the monthly calendar. In February, Milan offers plenty of things to do. One of the most remarkable appointments is with great music and Laura Pausini' concert on February 26, at the FilaForum. This famous Italian singer sold over 16 million copies of her records in the past. She has attained 160 platinum discs, a long list of gold discs and many international awards. Ms. Pausini has recently released her first "Best of" collection which has already sold over one million copies. The new record contains some previous hits that have been rearranged ("Seamisai/Cuando Se Ama" sung with Gilberto Gil). It also includes two previously unreleased tracks, entitled "E Ritorno da Te/Volverè Junto a Ti" and "Una Storia che Vale/Dos Historias Iguales". By combining previous songs with new ones, Ms. Pausini has planted the seeds for a new stage in her artistic production. And, considering the amazing success of her latest record, her future looks bright! If you are now in Milan, do not miss this chance to listen to Laura Pausini live. This internationally renowned Italian born artist, is truly exceptional. In February, Milan will be hosting another great singer and pianist. We are talking about Diana Krall, whose concert is scheduled for February 11th at Teatro Smeraldo. This young Canadian artist who, according to music critics, is destined to enter the history of jazz, has already had a remarkable career. In 1999, after two nominations, she won a Best Jazz Vocal Performance GRAMMY and became the first jazz artist in 25 years to be nominated for the Album of the Year category. Since then, she has performed in several television programs. Her music has been featured in a number of movies, including "Autumn in New York", "The Score" and "Random Hearts". Ms. Krall is a first-class diva. The technical ability in her voice shows she has learned the lessons of the greatest jazz singers of all times, from Sarah Vaughan to Dinah Washington. Her new record, "The Look of Love", is characterized by elegant piano solos and sensual vocals. If you are lucky enough to attend her performance at Teatro Smeraldo, you will be surprised. Diana's voice even surpasses her legendary beauty! Milan is an international city visited yearly by millions who come here for business. Three important fairs will be held in February. They are organized by Fiera di Milano. The first fair, Macef Primavera, will be held February 8th - 11th. It is an international exhibition of tableware, household and gift items, silverware, jewelry and watches (information tel. 02.48.55.01). The second fair, BIT ( International Tourism Exchange) will be held February 20th-24th. It will host thousands of operators from all countries (information: tel 02-34984.1). The third fair begins February 24th and runs until March 5th. During this time fashion designers will be presenting their new 2002-2003 Fall-Winter collections. According to fashion analysts, after an exceptionally good year in 2000 and a very good 2001, forecasts for this season are reassuring. Milan becomes a show in itself invaded by a colorful international crowd. It is an outdoor catwalk for the fashion people of the planet. So, relax and enjoy the fashion shows. Milan will be, as usual, a good and memorable host (information: tel. 02.77.71.081). Now, let us give you some information on the new European currency which has replaced the Lira. The 'Euro' entered circulation on January 1st, 2002. You can continue to use both Lira and Euro for all cash transactions until February 28th (1 Euro = 1936.27 Lire). Cash dispensers (called bancomats) are already distributing only Euro. Beginning March 1st, all transactions will only be allowed in Euro. In order to avoid confusion during the so called 'double-circulation period', when both Euro and Lira can be used, you might prefer to make your purchases with a credit card. "City Lights News Milan" wishes you a pleasant stay in Milan. See you again in March with our next issue. The English version of "City Lights News Milan" differs slightly from the Italian version. Theatre plays spoken in Italian are not included in the English version. In their place original movies are listed. Please note that occasionally, show time scheduled may change or events may be canceled.
