Monique Hennagan won the event in 52.97.
With her usual competition not running or injured, Nicole Teter was a strong favorite heading into the 800m final.
However, Teter injected some extra excitement into the race by leading wire to wire and running a new American Record of 1:58.71.
100 meters in, Teter has already jumped out to a lead.
