Shauna Marsh (left, 2:20.17) won the first heat while Rice (2:20.70) finished second.
Rice runs for Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine.
Gardiner finished third in 2:24.35.
Brunswick (ME) High's Courtney Dwyer (5th, 2:27.17).
Casey Davis (8th, 2:30.67).
Shelly Estes of Maine's Hampden Academy finished fifth.
Mary Heitkamp leads on the first turn of heat two (the seeded race).

Engel and Lewis lead the pack but trail Heitkamp.

Hampden Academy's Farley (in purple) was the defending champion.
Canada's Katie Engel led with 300 meters to go and hung on to win in a meet-record time of 2:11.17.
Lauren Lewis of South Regional (NJ) finished second in 2:11.36.
Heitkamp of Fair Haven (VT) finished third in 2:15.11.
Tess Acton (left, 4th, 2:15.50) and Hilary Egan (5th, 2:16.25).
Annie Bourgeois of Canada finished seventh in 2:21.55.
Ashley Hill finished ninth in 2:27.65.
