The last women's champion to successfully defend her title was Tegla Loroupe, who won in 1994 and 1995.
Lyubov Denisova never made an appearance in the lead pack - she passed through halfway in 1:13:32...
...but she ran a strong second half to move up to fifth place. Her 2:25:58 was faster than her runner-up finish one year ago.
Susan Chepkemei finished seventh in 2:29:05.
1999 New York City Marathon Champion Adriana Fernandez finished eighth in 2:32:09.
Fernandez had originally planned to run the Chicago Marathon but had to withdraw due to injury.
Olivera Jevtic of Yugoslavia finished ninth in 2:32:29. Jevtic was disqualified in NYC a year ago...
...after finishing third and testing positive for ephedrine. She was given a warning but was not suspended.
Sylvia Mosqueda leads Firaya Sultanova-Zhdanova as they enter Central Park in the 24th mile.
Mosqueda finished 10th in 2:33:10, a personal best. Mosqueda earned the Alberto Salazar award...
...given to the top American male and female.
Sultanova-Zhdanova, 42, finished 11th and was the top master in 2:33:57.
Helena Javornik of Slovenia stayed with the leaders early on...
...but suffered in the second half, finishing 12th in 2:35:07.
Natalia Berkut of the Ukraine finished 13th in 2:35:23.
Berkut passed through 10k in 34:50 and halfway in 1:14:17.
Esther Kiplagat finished 14th in 2:35:58.
Gladys Asiba finished 15th in 2:37:47.
Dorota Gruca of Poland ran by us in the 24th mile, but did not finish.
Jenny Crain was the second U.S. finisher, placing 16th overall in 2:38:49.
