In the sixth mile, Marla Runyan has dropped back to the second group and F102 Leah Malot and F104 Olga Romanova continue to set the pace.
In the eighth mile, some runners from the second group catch back up to the leaders.
In the 11th mile, the lead group consists of approximately 10 runners.
Just before the 12-mile mark, the pacesetters lead with Margaret Okayo, Ludmila Petrova, Lornah Kiplagat and Firaya Sultanova-Zhdanova close behind.
Just past halfway - which the leaders passed in 1:12:07 - Margaret Okayo leads the way with pacesetter Leah Malot temporarily trailing.
Romanova dropped out at the halfway point but Malot continued on past mile 14 (above).
Heading off the Queensboro Bridge and up First Avenue, things started to stretch out as the runners approached the 17 mile mark.
In the 21st mile, Margaret Okayo began to gradually pull away from Lornah Kiplagat and Catherine Ndereba.
In the 22nd mile, Okayo's lead is small but significant.
Okayo seemed to disagree with Kiplagat and Ndereba about which side of the road would allow them to run the shortest route.
Heading by Marcus Garvey Park, just past the 22-mile mark, Okayo looked like she was headed for victory.
Still in the 23rd mile, Okayo increases her lead over Catherine Ndereba and Lornah Kiplagat.
Okayo was approximately 55 seconds ahead of her own course record pace at the 23-mile mark.
Okayo went on to win in 2:22:31, breaking her own course record (from 2001) by 1:50.
Catherine Ndereba followed up her World Championship gold with a silver in New York (2:23:03).
Lornah Kiplagat finished third in 2:23:43 and the top three were all under the old course record.
Kiplagat won the ING Run for Something Better, raising money for Brooklyn's McCarren Park and her own High Altitude Training Center.
Ludmila Petrova finished fourth in 2:25:00, beating her winning time from 2000.
Petrova finished second in the Run for Something Better, raising money for Thomas Jefferson Park, which she passed on First Avenue.
Defending champion Joyce Chepchumba finished sixth in 2:26:06.
