Runners get ready for the start of the 2004 Circle of Friends New York Mini 10K.
Approximately 4,300 women participated in the race.
This year's race featured top American professional runners...
...as an Olympic-year tribute. Three of the runners in the field - Colleen De Reuck...
...Deena Kastor, and Jen Rhines - had already secured spots on the U.S. Olympic Marathon team.
Many of the others in the race would compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field...
...in July. Above, Claudia Camargo of Argentina and Danbury, CT, one of the top non-U.S. runners.

The race went out at a fairly pedestrian 5:27 for the first mile, allowing all of the top runners to stay near the front.
Deena Kastor, the race favorite, had planned to wait until two miles to make a move, but she got impatient...
...and started picking up the pace during the second mile. By the time the runners...
...entered Central Park about 1.5 miles into the race, she had already put some distance...
...on Colleen De Reuck, Jen Rhines, and Kate O'Neill.
The remained of the race was a solo run for Kastor, who focused on using...
...the course to her advantage. This was Kastor's first race back since she finished...
...second at the U.S. Olympic Trials in April (after entering as the heavy favorite but fading...
...in the final miles). Kastor was not completely alone on the course, she had many spectators cheering her on...
...as she ran through Central Park. After the 5:27, she ran 5:10 for the second mile, and 4:54 for the third...
...with a 5K split of 16:06. Her last three miles were 5:07, 4:55, and 4:54. Drossin won her first Mini convincingly...
...in 31:44 - the fastest time ever run by an American on this course, beating Anne Marie Letko's 31:52 from 1994.
