P. A. and Area Community Against Family Violence
There is no room for violence in a family, in a community or in a society. Yet we are surrounded by violence and often feel helpless to stop it. Violence is the abuse of power, it is domination over those who do not have the physical, emotional or mental strength to stand up for themselves or their rights. Violence is sometimes a chance encounter, but abuse as a form of violence is most often suffered at the hands of someone we know or love.
Continual violence and abuse in a family situation often goes undetected. A battered wife is too ashamed to ask for help - an abused child has nowhere to run. Dating violence and violent conflict resolution continue to be common problems among students at schools and universities. We are all potential victims of violence, and must be part of the solution to a violence-free community.
The Prince Albert and Area Community Against Family Violence (CAFV) is working toward this goal through education, awareness and prevention activities and by promoting community directions to end family violence. Originally founded as the Task Force on Family Violence in 1990 by female survivors of abuse and violence who desired change, CAFV is a collection of agencies who, directly or indirectly, deal with issues of family violence. CAFV has created an inventory of local services and is collecting and cataloguing resources of anti-violence services in Prince Albert and other Canadian communities. When this is complete they will be made available to any interested persons or groups. Two working committees focusing on violence against women, and on children and youth issues, have also been created by CAFV. Working with service providers, groups and individuals, CAFV participates in and organizes media conferences, produces signs, posters, public service commercials, information displays, workshops and videos to make people aware of family violence, its causes and that it is a criminal offence. CAFV encourages networking and participation in conferences and workshops by frontline service providers.
This month, CAFV will be co-hosting a conference with the P. A. Child Abuse Council and Parents Against Violence Everywhere (PAVE). Parenting Trek - The Next Generation will be held at St. Mary's High School on May 2nd and 3rd. The conference focus is on individual responsibility and behaviour in building a violence-free home, school and community. Discussions and workshops will centre on issues of parenting; safer home, school and community environments for children. There will be many informative and practical workshops geared to parents. In addition, there will be displays with information about support services and initiatives concerning family violence. Keynote Speaker is Michael Kaufman, founder of the White Ribbon Campaign - Men Against Violence Against Women.
The creation of a violence-free community can only be achieved through partnerships, and community involvement. In our area, many individuals, agencies and groups are working with CAFV to make our community a safer place. To get involved or to know more, contact Paige Finney or Monique Beneteau c/o 110 - 8th St. E., Prince Albert, phone: (306) 953-6219 or fax: (306) 763-2101.
