What's New This Year at Woodland Istitute SIAST
(For more articles on Woodland Istitute SIAST click )
Woodland Institute will be offering new programs in the 1997/1998 SIAST Calendar. These programs have been developed to reflect new trends in business and industry in Saskatchewan and will help prepare Saskatchewan people for a leading role in today's employment market.
The Multimedia Communications Certificate program, starting this Fall, examines Saskatchewan's multimedia industry and will provide project based training in all aspects of multimedia production including writing/text, graphics, digital imaging, sound and animation. The focus is on computer/digital generation of multimedia projects, and classes are designed to develop communication skills, creativity and provide the technical skills needed to create effective multimedia presentations and projects.
Recent consultations with private industry and public institutions along with a close scrutiny of labour market needs, led to the development of the Computer System Support Certificate program, one of Woodland's new Business courses. The program will provide basic computer hardware and software knowledge, workplace skills, theoretical and practical courses which will lead to entry level positions in the computer support field. This program is designed to accommodate part-time and full time students. Practical experience will be gained through practicums until work-based internships can be put in place. The growing demand for support people will enable graduates to find employment in large businesses, organizations and small firms.
The Entrepreneurship and Small Business Certificate is a 35 week program aimed at budding entrepreneurs. The program will take graduates through the complete process of start-up, development, expansion and management of a small business. Assignments are all relevant to business operation and the workshop format will facilitate the exchange of information and encourage student, instructor and business community interaction.
A new Barber/Stylist program involves lectures, group work, labs and will also provide a Work Placement program and an Apprenticeship period of up to two years. The 40 week (1400 hours) course will create various employment opportunities for graduates including Barber/Stylist, salon owner, sales representative and other possibilities.
A 40 week Community Service Justice Certificate program which includes a four week practicum, will prepare students to work in First Nations communities and urban centres. The program is designed to develop specialized aboriginal justice related skills and will prepare graduates for employment in research, development and implementation of community based justice projects, support services, community liaison agencies, courts and law firms.
Various municipal and provincial government departments, First Nations groups and public sector companies contributed to the development of the Fire Fighter Training Certificate program, which will be offered in the Spring of 1997.
A new Heritage Interpreter program will qualify graduates for employment in parks, museums, art galleries, historic sites, cultural centres, botanical gardens, sanctuaries and protected areas.
Complete information about these and other programs is available from Woodland Institute SIAST (306) 953-7010.
