Carlton Comprehensive High School

(For more articles on Carlton C. H. S. click HERE)

In 1970, the P.A. School District #3, the Rural School Unit 56 and the Catholic School District #6, had a vision of how education could be. Carlton Comprehensive High School opened its doors in 1975, and a new era in high school education began.

What is different about Carlton Comprehensive? It is the largest comprehensive school in the area. It has excellent facilities with continuous change that brings new ideas and new technology into the classroom. Many classrooms have a computer linked to the Internet, giving students and teachers a wealth of resources and information at their fingertips.

Carlton Comprehensive teachers have piloted and implemented new Saskatchewan Education curriculum. This year marks the completion of a two year Social Studies and History pilot project that will soon be implemented province wide. Another pilot project launched in 1996 will be completed at Carlton in 1998, before being adopted throughout the province. This English pilot project is an adjunct to the current English courses available and is designed for students who want more English. Journalism, communications, mass media and creative writing - courses which were previously offered only at the post secondary education level, are now offered at Carlton Comprehensive High School.

Pilot projects like these go far beyond the scope of ordinary education and require special dedication by teachers to make them work. Imagine the challenge of writing courses, preparing plans, examinations and textbooks for classes which have never been taught at high school. Imagine the meetings, the consultations with experts and the hours of extra work required to set up a pilot project and carry it through to its completion. Carlton teachers are visionaries and eagerly volunteer to pioneer new courses so that Carlton Comprehensive will remain on the leading edge in education.

This year is almost over. The Carlton High school calendar will soon be marking the end of another year full of events and activities. In May, the achievement and awards night was held to recognize students from Grades 10,11 and 12 who achieved academic success. On June 4th, the annual Sports Banquet will be held at 6:00pm in the Cafetorium. Everyone will be at this traditional fun night where teams, coaches and players are rewarded for their inspiration, their leadership, and their sportsmanship. The biggest event of the year will be Graduation Day, scheduled for June 20th. Michael Denny will deliver the valedictory address for the 297 graduates in the Class of 97. Cap & Gown ceremonies will begin at 11:00 in the Cafetorium, followed by a Reception Tea in the Red Gym. The Grand March will begin at 9:00pm at the Golf & Curling Club, with dancing until midnight, and the traditional chemical and alcohol free After Grad Celebrations bringing things to a close. Graduation - a time to bid farewell, a time to eagerly search out new horizons. The coming year will be a time of change and challenge for the graduates and for Carlton Comprehensive High School. If they face the future with the same determination and dedication that has brought them where they are today, then they will achieve their dreams. Congratulations and may good fortune shine on your endeavours.

New Prince Albert Map System

(For more articles about City LightsNews HERE)

City Lights News is celebrating its 5th Birthday this month. For the past five years, we have been promoting Prince Albert. We've publicized events, associations and businesses in our printed edition and since 1994, in electronic format on the Internet. We have created a virtual Prince Albert with directories for clubs and organizations, an email directory, official web pages for the City of Prince Albert and many local hotels, restaurants and businesses. Now we have just launched our Prince Albert Map System on the Internet. This complete map system has special zoom features that will give details of specific areas of the city. Each map shows the streets, highlights the City Lights News businesses and organizations in that area, and provides direct links to each web site. We have also incorporated an active street index and search feature that will take you right to the map. You may visit City Lights News on the Internet at this address:
