Helping Hands

The Prince Albert Health District provides health care to more than 55,000 people. Many of the PAHD programs and projects are carried out by volunteers, especially those involving long term care residents or hospital patients. There are many opportunities and more than 55,000 good reasons to volunteer your time in your health district. April is volunteer appreciation month to recognize the people who have given their time and efforts to make life a little more comfortable for others. The Prince Albert Health District would like to say a special thank you to the dedicated people who volunteer their time in many district health care programs.

Volunteers assist with meal times at the Herb Basset Home, Birchview Home, Mont St. Joseph, Pineview and Kinistino Lodge. Volunteers visit patients at Victoria Hospital, Kinistino Hospital and Holy Family Hospital. They help with therapy, act as companions for outings or help deliver meals. Volunteers are involved in palliative care, mental health, drug and alcohol abuse awareness programs, aboriginal health services and volunteers are dedicated to raising funds for special equipment, projects or programs - in the Victoria Hospital Foundation for example.

The Victoria Hospital Foundation relies on volunteers and community support to achieve its goals and objectives. Volunteers sit on the Board of Directors, attend monthly meetings and give direction to the Victoria Hospital Foundation. Volunteers also help organize special projects and events.

The Foundation also initiates fund-raising events to raise money and to promote greater community involvement and awareness of the expanding role of the Victoria Hospital as an important regional health care centre.

April is the kickoff month for the Foundation's annual car raffle which is a very special event this year. The prize will be a 1997, Z28 Camaro convertible, produced by General Motors to celebrate Camaro's 30th Anniversary. This fund raiser will wind-up just before Christmas with the prize draw on December 24th. Tickets are now available. To learn more about the Foundation and its activities or to volunteer call Stan Danbrook 764-1254.

How Can You Help

Herb Bassett Home, Pineview Terrace Lodge, and Pineland Home Care need people to help with recreational activities, outings, meal times and Meals-On-Wheels.

The Victoria Hospital needs patient greeters and adults to provide hugs, help with meals and play activities in the Children's ward.

The Victoria Hospital and Pineview Terrace Lodge need people to help with communication tasks such as reading and writing.

Preparing games and activities and making toys can be done in your own home or at the Victoria Hospital.

Kinsmen Kinette

It's really not on to speak about a lady's age but there is a lady who will celebrating her 50th on April 30, who is worthy of our attention and good wishes. The Prince Albert Kinette Club was formed fifty years ago and has certainly left its mark on our city. Founded by wives of Kinsmen to assist them in community projects and fund raising, Kinettes have also initiated many projects of their own. Meals on Wheels, equipment and furnishings for local hospitals, the Apple-a-day, play therapy and free skate programs are all club projects, as is the Buckle-Up Baby program providing car seats for babies. Kinettes hosted and sponsored the Juried Art Show for many years and provide the Women's Shelter with a care giver for the summer months. The Club sponsors a child in a third world country, helps Kinsmen Telemiracle and directs much effort into raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis. The P.A. Kinette Club is looking for new members from the general public. To join the club or for more information contact Paula Eldstrom at 763-8635 or 763-4583.
