Can you be involved in making decisions about your health services? Yes you can. Can you work with others so that everyone will benefit from better health care services? Yes, you can do that too. How? By becoming a member of a health care co-op - the Prince Albert Co-operative Health Centre.
There are many reasons for becoming a member of the Centre. Some join because they like having all the services in one location. Others enjoy the financial benefits of being an Assessed Member. Whatever the reason, anyone 16 years or older can become a lifetime member by purchasing a $5.00 share in the Co-operative. Each member has a vote at all Membership meetings.
Members elect the Board of Directors, may sit on the Board or committees, receive the Healthlines Newsletter and notices and have a voice in the direction of the Health Centre.
Many members choose to pay an annual assessment to help pay for programs not funded by Medicare. In turn, these Assessed Members will receive a reduction in the cost of de-insured services.
The Health Centre is different from other medical clinics in the variety of services offered and the way it is organized and managed. The Centre is a non-profit organization operated and controlled by its Members through an elected Board of Directors and is a partnership between users and providers. Doctors and staff are paid a salary to provide services. Over thirty different health care services and programs including medical and illness care, disease prevention, health promotion and social programs are available in one centre. A team of professionals, using a multi-disciplinary approach, provides services and works with other community members to develop programs which will benefit individuals and the community at large.
The medical partnership of twelve doctors is called the Community Clinic. Under an agreement with the Prince Albert Co-operative Health Centre, the Clinic provides medical services to the Co-operative, while the Health Centre provides the staff, the building and the equipment. The Community Clinic also provides physician services to the Canwood and District Health Services Co-operative and to the Birch Hills Medical Centre. Two dentists are contracted by the Co-operative Health Centre to provide dental services to Prince Albert and Canwood Co-operatives. All the services of the Prince Albert Co-operative Health Centre and the Community Clinic doctors are available to everyone, whether they are members or not. Membership and Assessed Membership are individual choices that are encouraged but not mandatory. To make appointments with any of the Health Care Providers, you can call the Health Centre or come directly to the Evening Clinic in the Minor Surgery Department on weekday evenings between 5:30 and 8:00 pm. You can buy a share or have your membership questions answered in person at the business office on the top floor of the Health Centre, or you may call or write to the Health Centre for more details. Take an active interest in your health. Join the Prince Albert Co-operative Health Centre Team.

Habitat For Humanity
Prince Albert's first Habitat house is not yet completed. Funds, building materials and volunteer labour are still needed for the project. You don't have to be a construction worker to help. People are also needed to do light work such as coordinating volunteers, making up schedules, getting pledges of materials and money or checking that site equipment and work practices are safe. Some of these things can be done by telephone and others must be done on site, but they do require something precious - your time and efforts. Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer organization that has been building homes for people who can't afford to buy a home but are willing to put in a down payment of manual work on the construction of their own home or future Habitat projects. Since it began in the USA in 1976, Habitat has built or remodelled more than 20,000 houses in over 40 different countries. Is there a reason why Prince Albert should not be a part of their success story? You can help! To donate material/funds or to volunteer call Frank Moore 763-6451 or Lois Peters 922-4235.
