  • Carlton Celebrates The Class of '96
  • (For more articles on Carlton C. H. S. click HERE)

Reading, writing and arithmetic were once considered to be the only basis of a sound high school education. Before TV, computers, satellites and orbiting space stations - a basic education was simple and sufficient. One entered high school, followed the curriculum, graduated and went out to take one's place in the workforce for a lifetime or went on to University for higher qualifications.

Today our lives are more complicated. Educational tools such as television and computers have stimulated learning in young children and led to exciting changes in educational standards and practices. For more than twenty years, Carlton Comprehensive High School has been an innovative educational institution offering high school students a wide range of educational choices. Carlton offers academic courses leading to university and college entrance, modified courses leading to graduation, transition courses for students over 16, an assortment of technical/vocational programs, music instruction through its band and choral program, a core French and French immersion program and a school-to-work transition program.

To graduate from Carlton Comprehensive High School, a student must meet the provincial requirements of having earned at least twenty-four credits during Grades Ten, Eleven and Twelve. Compulsory classes include English, Math, Science and the Social Sciences, at least one credit in Fine Arts, one in Physical Education and at least two classes in the Practical and Applied Arts program. It seems clear that reading, writing and arithmetic are still considered to be the basic building blocks of a high school education. The main difference is that even in the compulsory classes, Carlton students have innumerable choices and have more control in the direction of their own education. For students experiencing difficulties in English, Math and Science, modified programs that target skill building in these subjects are also available.

In the area of Fine Arts, students may take classes in music, drama, design and drawing, printmaking, painting and working with clay. They may also enrol in media which covers audio, projection and single video camera production while investigating the effects this technology has on today's society. Social Sciences courses include History, Native Studies, Social Studies, Law, Psychology and Parenting Skills. In the realm of Physical Education the objectives are not only to increase fitness and impart knowledge of the benefits of physical activities, it is also aimed at developing awareness of the career opportunities available in this area.

On June 21st Carlton Comprehensive High School will be holding its graduation ceremonies for approximately 400 students. The morning begins with gown and cap pick up at 9:15am, Presentation Ceremonies at 11:00am, Reception Tea at 2:30pm and the Grand March & Dance from 9:00pm to Midnight. A chemical and alcohol free After Grad Celebration begins after midnight. All those attending must have permission and the Transportation Committee will provide rides home.

Congratulations to Carlton Comprehensive High School Graduates. May your continued quest for personal excellence lead you to a bright and rewarding future.
