  • The Prince Albert Multicultural Council
  • Canada is a multicultural country. Each of us brings our heritage and our traditions into the melting pot that forges our Canadian identity. Multiculturism is a way of life in our cities, our towns and our rural areas. Prince Albert is no exception.

The Prince Albert Multicultural Council, a non-profit organization incorporated in 1974, began eleven years earlier as a social group to promote ethnic dances and provide entertainment for various events. Tapestrama began as an annual international dinner. Average ticket sales were 350 people with proceeds going to the dance groups to help them with travel and honorarium.

In 1975, Multicultural Week incorporated various events into a week-long festival which in 1976, became the popular two day folkfest Tapestrama with 23 booths and an average attendance of over 5,000 people.

The P. A. Multicultural Council sponsors the Canada Day Celebrations, Saskatchewan Anniversary Celebrations and participates in the Indian Metis Friendship Centre's annual Powwow. From social group to social conscience, today the Prince Albert Multicultural Council is officially recognized as a settlement agency for immigrants and refugees, funded by the Provincial and Federal governments. The Council sponsors Citizenship Courts, International Women's Day, co-sponsors Christmas at City Hall, organizes programs and activities for the International Week for Elimination of Racial Discrimination and works on any issues concerning racism, discrimination or human rights. The Multicultural Centre, 31-13th Street East, is open five days a week (weekends on request) for social events, meetings and educational programs. Volunteers and staff provide counseling, information, orientation, translating/interpreting services, English classes and host programs to assist newcomers with everyday tasks. It also functions as a drop-in centre for newcomers and mainstream Canadians. Every Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, the Multicultural Centre is open to everyone for a pleasant afternoon of coffee, conversation and various programs.

In the end, it is our cultural differences that bring us together. They are the vibrant threads that weave each story into our unique Canadian tapestry. Multiculturism is the loom that provides the framework for creating a strong Canadian Society that can look upon the past with pride and toward the future with hope for peace and harmony.

    Service Clubs and Associations:

  • Prince Albert Mid-Pro Rock & Gem Society
  • Diamonds, emeralds, soapstone, agates and shiny pebbles are all treasured by lapidaries who, since the dawn of man, have altered, carved, drilled, cut, polished, sculpted and engraved gemstones, minerals, rock, bone and shells. A rigorous apprenticeship kept the art in the hands of a few skilled craftsman until modern technology opened the door to anyone desiring to learn the skills. The Mid Pro Rock and Gem Society meets at the Arts Centre on the first Wednesday and third Friday of every month. Short business meetings are followed by demonstrations and discussions of lapidary techniques. Classes taught by experienced members are held every Thursday evening from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Members are encouraged to use the fully equipped workshop and a supply of rocks is always on hand. The Society holds shows and demonstrations during the year and in April, the Annual Rock and Gem Show is a popular event. For more information: Douglas Hodgins 764-1049.
