Forging Ahead

(For more articles on the Prince Albert Health District click HERE)

The Prince Albert District Health Board (PADHB) is forging ahead in its quest to improve the health and well being of district residents.

The goals of the PADHB are the enhancement of Regional Health Centre services in Prince Albert, effective resource management, health care improvement and prevention programs, culturally appropriate health services and creating a positive public image. How close is our District Board to reaching any or all of these goals?

This past year, changes in funding formulas and standards on federal, provincial and local levels occurred. Government services (Public Health and Mental Health) were transferred to the health boards. Health board elections were initiated. Funding, standards, services and organization. How will these key factors influence our Health Board's ability to meet its objectives?

The establishment of a Regional Health Centre is well under way with three major development projects. The Victoria Hospital Redevelopment project has been initiated, the Birch Hills Medical Centre is nearing completion, and construction of the new, 120 bed long term care facility will begin next Spring. Right on target.

In the areas of health improvement, prevention and cultural sensitivity, the PADHB has approved the funding of twenty-one programs for 1995/96, for a total of $993,106. The list of approved projects includes: Chronic Pain Program, Mental Health High Schools Project, Pastoral Care, Bereavement Training, Aboriginal Health Worker, Acute Care Replacement Worker, Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, Client Managed Home IV Therapy, Community Development Officer, Community Therapies Program, Diabetes Education Program, Family Violence Project, First Responders, Health Help Line, Health Promotions, In-Home Respite, Mobile Crisis Unit, Maternal Discharge Support Program, Speech/Language Pathology, Women's Wellness Center, Won Ska's Traditional Family Wellness Project. It would appear that the District Health Board has again, achieved its objectives.

Our Health District now employs over 1500 people and operates with an annual budget of fifty-three million dollars. Effective resource management plans include a Continuous Quality Improvement Program for all services by 1996, district accreditation by 1999, and implementation of comprehensive district policies by December of 1996. So far, it's all going according to schedule.

Toward the creation of a positive public image, this year in May, the Board unveiled a new slogan and logo to provide a single, visual corporate identity. The slogan, the result of a community-wide contest, was chosen from forty-one entries. Then the new logo was designed around its meaning. An explanation of the logo is:

It represents our community, a community which shares in the well-being of its individuals; working together to celebrate their past accomplishments while striving to address their unmet needs and achieve better health for all.

There are now nineteen artists in Kyla who will be displaying and selling at the show: Dennis Abernethy, Fred Bahr, Vera Bliss, Audrey Boyce, Marie Bristol, Fred Desjarlais, Linda & Jack Jensen, Frances Hanson, Angie Hempel, Elsie Hoffman, Merv Melby, Joyce Middlebrook, Rose Mineau, Grant Moore, Marni Mullis, Dorie Russell, Frank Sudol and Tom Tilford. The mediums used by the artists vary from delicate water color, vibrant oils and ink, to bronze, pottery and wood carvings.
